Homemade Cat Litter
Have you ever tried making homemade cat litter? If YOU have a special homemade recipe or tip to share please share it here!
My new cat, “Willie” was neutered and I was advised by the spay and neuter clinic to use dust free litter such as the biodegradable litters like Yesterday’s News. Apparently, the dust that clays or other litters give off can irritate the incision site and might cause an infection in male cats, since their incisions don’t require sutures.
Shredded Paper Cat Litter
I tried shredding regular office paper and junk mail and placed it at the bottom of the litter box by itself. The only problem is that regular paper doesn’t absorb odors one bit… In addition, my cat completely refuses to use it! I’ve been keeping him in a spare room with all his necessities at night so he won’t be tempted to use the other cats’ clay litter boxes. Luckily, I only have to do this for 7 days. Would you believe that he didn’t use the restroom for almost a whole day because he hated the new paper litter! If you have a picky cat and you are trying to switch litters then you may want to do it gradually. In my case… I probably should have started the switch before his surgery but I didn’t really plan ahead. Note: Below is what I decided to do and I’m not advising you to do it.. I’m just telling you what I did. You should not use dusty litter for male cats after they have just been neutered. Okay…
So to get my cat to use his new homemade cat litter, I put a tiny bit of the clay litter at the bottom and put loads of newspaper on top of it. Hopefully this will help with the dust a bit. I think the “sensation” of his old litter made him feel better about it and now he is using it. Of course he still prefers the clay but at least he isn’t holding his urine all day long! If you’d like to make your own homemade cat litter then try an inventive recipe with paper, baking soda and a little mushing action! Find a unique recipe here! When making changes to your cat’s litter be sure to do so gradually, otherwise you may have some problems. If you want to make a permanent change, try adding just a bit of the new mixture to her regular litter and slowly add more and more paper litter over time. It may take awhile for kitty to adjust so be patient. Do you have a homemade cat litter recipe you’d like to share or a comment? Please share it here!
